FAQs
What is a radar detector?
A radar detector is a small device that is mounted on the dashboard of
a vehicle. Its purpose is to alert the driver to the presence of any police
speed traps within the area. This allows the driver time to slow down
before reaching the speed trap/speed camera.
Are they legal?
Following an Appeal Court ruling in January 1998 it concluded that Radar
Detectors are completely legal to own and use in the UK. However, please
check local laws before using a radar/laser detector outside of the UK.
Our law section covers this in much more detail.
How do detectors locate radar?
A radar signal is conical in shape, much like a torch beam. At 200 yards,
the normal range of a radar gun, the signal is as wide as a dual carriageway.
Most of the signal therefore goes past the target and on up the road reflecting
off trees, houses etc, eventually becoming radar scatter.
Detectors are extremely sensitive radio receivers tuned to these frequencies
and can detect very small particles of radar scatter at up
to 2 miles in some cases.
Will I get a ticket if a police laser gun has pointed
directly at me?
Possibly, if you are travelling alone on a road and a laser gun is within
2 miles of you. However, if there are cars in front of you within a 2
mile radius of the laser gun then no you should not, as the laser gun
signal will be pointing at cars ahead of you and the signal will then
scatter alerting you in good time to slow down.
Are there any other costs apart from the initial
purchase price?
GPS Detectors can only function properly with the use of satellite technology
constantly updating the unit, therefore when you purchase your GPS detector
you are tied to an Annual fee (which can vary from company to company).
Radar Detectors do not use satellites, they simply detect a radar beam,
therefore they do not require updating and your only cost is the initial
purchase price.
How can it help me?
Radar detectors are specially designed to help you to drive safely within
the confines of todays speed limits. They quickly and easily alert
you to the presence of Police Speed traps which are often found located
at accident blackspots, indicating potentially dangerous and hazardous
situations.
How long will it take to deliver and how much does
this cost?
Delivery within the UK is FREE and orders are normally dispatched on the
same day that the order is placed. However, please allow up to 28 working
days for delivery.
Is there any reason why I couldn't use RadarScout
in my vehicle?
Detectors installed in vehicles fitted with heat reflective, solar or
heat insulating windscreens will give a reduced warning distance due to
the screens metallic content. Vehicles fitted with standard heated
front windscreens, for instance Ford Quickclear windscreens, are unaffected.

MORI Report
Direct Line commissioned MORI to conduct a nationwide survey. It found
that despite recent media reports, only 21% of drivers think that speed
cameras are an infringement on people's civil liberties and only 16% believe
they are a waste of time and money.

Who manages Safety Cameras on the roads?
Everyday about 10 people will die and a further 70 will be seriously
injured on our roads and excessive or inappropriate speed will be a factor
in a significant number of these accidents. Cameras have played a vital
part in helping us reduce road casualties:
